The Manager, Software Development and Architecture is a technical expert and a leader in managing the software development, maintenance and integration of complex applications to ensure the established target dates are met and the software process is followed. At this level, the incumbent demonstrates a passion and in-depth knowledge of application development, architecture and staff management. S/he motivates the team reporting to her/him to refine software development skills and adopts best practices for developing pragmatic software solutions for the organization. Leading the charge, s/he provides technical guidance to the team and continues to raise the bar on mastery of application development.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plans and manages application projects; forecasts short- and long-term results; makes effective use of budget and resources to satisfy divisional commitments according to established schedules.
  • Supervises staff and provides technical guidance to direct reports; evaluates job performance and conducts salary administration.
  • Performs work with no supervision, and work is assigned in terms of broad objectives.
  • For the Microsoft .NET development stream: Applies expert knowledge of domains, design patterns and application development to define, design and maintain application architecture, application data models, security, system interfaces (both internal and external) and frameworks.
  • For the Business Intelligence stream: Applies expert knowledge of data modeling, big data and data warehousing techniques to define, design and maintain data warehouse architecture, business intelligence applications, security and data analytics.
  • Other duties as assigned. 
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Experience in managing a team of software developers. Project management skills at the PMP certification level.
  • University graduation or professional certification (e.g. P. Eng, CMA, CGA or equivalent courses).
  • More than 10 years of experience in this field.
  • Demonstrates an expert knowledge of multi-tier web application architectures, enterprise application interfaces, security, relational databases, software development methodologies, and Microsoft technologies.
  • Experience in programming and debugging multi-tier complex web or business intelligence applications as part of a multi-disciplinary team environment (following an agile framework such as SCRUM preferred), based on Microsoft Team Foundation Server.
  • Experience in leveraging modeling techniques such as UML and wire frames to communicate ideas.
  • Experience with database management (i.e. database design, schema creation, and concurrency and performance considerations).
  • For the Microsoft .NET development stream: Extensive experience in design patterns, domain modeling, entity frameworks, web services, and application/database performance tuning. Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of Microsoft ASP.NET web application architecture, MVC and the .NET framework. Extensive experience in ASP.NET, C#, AJAX, WCF and VB6, with a good working knowledge of security, web services, JavaScript, CSS, jQuery, DOM manipulation, COM/DCOM, Oracle 11g and PL/SQL. Knowledge of Microsoft BizTalk and SharePoint a definite asset.
  • For the business intelligence stream: Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of Microsoft BI architecture, established data warehouse development methodologies, multi-dimensional data modelling, predictive analysis and big data processing. Extensive experience in BI design and implementation, and metadata management, with a good working knowledge of data warehouse performance turning, data security and OLAP reporting/analysis tools. Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, TSQL, MDX and SSIS/SSRS/SSAS. Knowledge of SharePoint and Microsoft big data tools such as Stream Analytics and Machine Learning a definite asset.
Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation:
  • Certification in Microsoft technologies preferred
